I began to search for a more disciplined form of expression. I wanted to find a form of expression which by discipline would give me a greater command of it - a form of expression as I said, that would involve hand, heart and mind completely as it were - the basic thing of life with its root in the earth, but which grows upwards slowly to bring understanding. At that time I could not find it through painting as then there were trends developing with which I could not identify.
